New To Converting

I am very new at this Dvd thing and all....I have loaded some movies for me and my kids to watch..only thing is we can only watch them on the pc...They are in AVI format..What do I need to do or download that is simple to put them into VCD format to watch them on my DVD/VCD ON the tv?Simple please.
