Have you tried opening the file in VirtualDub??? it should be able to open it.

But if VDub can't try DivXFix (http://www.divx-digest.com/software/divfix.html) it sdhould do the trick (Make a backup of the file just to make sure nothing happens to it)

Here are the things I think I know about it.

          - When the power goes down, the software that was capturing cannot finish the avi file. The capure software don't write on the the file "some things" that should have been writen in the end of the file (that says what kind of file it is). That's why VirtualDub or any other software cannot open.

          - Here is my question:

Anybody know some software that can continue writing on this unfinished file?

          Thanks

PS: If anybody doesn't understand what I wrote, ask me to be more clear

Seems like your system is unstable. I guess as soon as CPU usage hits 100%, she powers down.
Get the latest motherboard drivers for your machine.
If its a VIA chipset, goto via-arena for example. Intel for intel chipset, etc

Can you post further details about your machine?

No my friend! You didn't understand me. I try to explain better!

My problem really is with the unfinished file.
It is rare to the power goes down, but it happens. And it is not problem of my computer.
Sometimes it happens, and when it happens i lose the file that is been writing. And I need to recover it. That is my real problem.

              Thanks

                Ok, i see.
                Open the file in VirtaulDub.
                Do it this way.

File/Open.......tick the "Popup extended options" and tick Redrive keyframe flags

If it does open, it might take some time....

Then, set "Video" to Direct Stream Copy and resave the avi under a different filename.

                Edit:
                I just read your post.

Not possible with the avi container.

"Not possible with the avi container."

I didn't understand this sentence. ( My english is not that good). And, another question: "avi container" is the end of the AVI file? If it's not, what's is the name of it? (I have heard something like "reef" of the file, I don't know exactly).

Thanks for your answer above. I will try what you said, but not now, because I'am working (heheh). At night I post again and say if it worked.

                  Thanks again for your time

If you can recover the file in VirtualDub, then you might be able to carry on where the the capture stopped.

You can then join the 2 avis later in virtualdub ..eg File/Append AVI segment and make just one avi.

                    He-he, I'm workin too.

                    Good Luck man

I tried to open the file in Vdub, but it says:

" Cannot determine file type of D:\MYfile.avi "

Does anybody have any idea to solve my problem?

                      thx

try opening the file in a hex editor and describe what you see.

Which Hex Editor do you think I should use?

                          thx

To be honest, why would you open it in a hex editor??
At most, you can change the fourcc but it sounds like the avi is useless.

Instead, try capturing using mpeg based recorder. Something like CyberLink PowerVCR II. At least the mpg file would be readable. avi file format is not the best when these kind of things happen.

there is a hex editor in virtual dub under tools.

just bear with me for this, i'll explain myself after you check
