size matters: making movies smaller in size (MB)

Hey professional video authoring folks,

i've got quite a few movies, also TV Series. Since this takes up quite a lot of space, is there a way to easily change the resolution of a movie??? I mean, the quality doesn't have to be bliss at all, i'm watching the stuff on TV anyway, but a movie of 25minutes taking up 250megs of space is just too much...

Do you know of any easy to handle tool?

You can either change the resolution of the movie, or make the video bitrate (CBR) smaller. To do this, get TMPGenc. But first, you didn't indicate whether the movie is in .avi or .mpg format. Let us know whether your watching the movies on your tv with a tv-out video card, or whether you converted them to vcd and then watching them on your dvd standalone.

Anyhow, about your question, does it make a difference when using avi instead of mpg?`I've got some movies in avi and some in mpg format. Mostly though, it's only to cut down the simpson or futurama series, which sometimes are about 200megabytes!! I mean, i've downloaded episodes that are 50MB in size and there's not a huge change in quality at all, so these avi files i'd like to cut down!

I mostly watch'em on my laptop or on TV, TV-out on laptop.

It sure does because .mpg's are usually twice as big as if it were an .avi file. So if you just download the programs/movies to watch on your laptop, you should stick to .avi to save disk space. Look for .avi's instead of .mpg's.

Yes, you can watch vcd/svcd's on a dvd player or xbox, but on certain "conditions". Your dvd player must support (s)vcd's and the xbox would need to have a special chip (or different modification) installed into it to allow the viewing of vcd's. However, you must also be able to watch dvd's on your xbox. You can find info on the xbox here
