Help Creating vcds

Can anyone help i am trying to create a vcd to play on my personal dvd player.I have downloaded a film and can play it on real player(i think its an avi file) on my computer.I downloaded avi2vcd and tried to encode the film a message comes up saying "Could not open source file you may not have a codec or direct show filter installed for this type of video" I have tried to find out about codecs and directshow filters but being new to all this frankly im baffled.any help would be appreciated not forgetting it will have to be in idiot fashion(step by step)haha thankyou for any help

Open the file in VirtualDub / NanDub or GSpot and post information regarding the file.This makes it much easier to determine the missing codecs.
