    sound Pb

hi everybody, first im french, so plz be indulgent with my english.

my problem is: i've encoded a dvd to divx using the SBC technique.
so at the end i've got one file, the the art of war.avi (1.18Go) & the french.ac3 (181mo)
But the problem is: when a want to "split" (sorry i dont know if the term is exact) the avi & the sound with nandub/virtual dub or avi mux, the final file .avi is 1.36Go, but win media player plays it with NO Sound.
it's the same with power dvd 3.
so i've tried to listen to the ac3 to see if its good: with powerdvd it worked fine.

the problem is, that when i split the files avi & ac3 the ac3 that worked before, doesn't work anymore...

i dont know if its a codec problem or whatever else. I've tried it under WIN XP PRO & 98SE.
    I have a SB live 5.1

    thanx for helping me!

You should use the specially modified .AC3 version of VirtualDub. You can download it from this site:

      hum doesn't work

but i've noticed some clues (or am i totally wrong?)
when i try to split the files: i open film.avi & video> direct srteam
afterwhat: audio>ac3 open french224.ac3 (re encoded with soft encode) & direct stram too.

but when i save the avi (F7) & on the status window click on perf, video is "direct stream" but sound is "no"
      so, is it normal?
but when the status is finished the file is bigger, so the sound must be in the avi: under win media player 8, no sound, power dvd3 too.
& on virtual dub, nandub etc.. : error msg: ACM failed to suggest audio decompression format....

could it be a codec problem?

        "hum doesn't work"

If you are actually trying to "merge" (add your .AC3 track to your video), as I understand from the details of your postings, and you've downloaded the correct VirtualDub (modified for .AC3), then do the following:

        1) Run VirtualDubAC3
        2) Change setting under "Audio" to "No audio"
        3) Load your video
        4) Change setting under "Audio" to "WAV or AC3 audio"
        5) Load your .AC3 audio file
        6) Change setting under "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying"
        7) Save your file with a new name

P.S. As was pointed out by one of the forums' moderators, under "Audio" "Interleaving", set as follows:

        A) If .AC3 is 192 kbits/sec set both "Preload and "Interleave" to 80ms

        B) If .AC3 is 384 kbits/sec set both "Preload and "Interleave" to 160ms

        C) If .AC3 is 448 kbits/sec set both "Preload and "Interleave" to 128ms

        Let us know of your success ;>}

i've tried one more time to do it ("merge" ac3 track with avi) but the result was the same: when i play in win media player or powerdvd: no sound.
And when i try to play the movie in virtual dub i get an error message: ACM failed to suggest audio decompression format
i've tried with 2 different AC3 files: one that is 224kb/s
          & the 2nd 384kb/s

PS: the step by step you told me, was alreday what i was doing before.

if you or anybody have an idea to help/solve my problem..

"And when i try to play the movie in virtual dub i get an error message: ACM failed to suggest audio decompression format"

This would appear to indicate that you are not using the specially modified (for .AC3) version of VirtualDub. If, in fact, this is the case, once again, go to:

            to download the required version...

P.S. You want to use this version of VirtualDub in order to MERGE the .AC3 file with the video portion of the .AVI file (as per the directions I've laid out previously) - NOT to PLAY anything.

hum, i re downloaded the AC3 modified prog, & re tried to make the AC3track with the avi
& when i play, there is no sound, but the sbc movie is pretty good, & i can sing the sound

is it a configuration, hard/soft ware problem?

                Singing is good for the soul ;>}

Seriously, though, if you've followed the VirtulDub-AC3 directions perfectly, I can't understand why you've been unsuccessful. I'm afraid I've run out of ideas...
