how to edit divx movies (like real movie editing - with transitions effects etc.)?

and how to convert divx, xvid, etc. movies to mpeg?

Some freeware editing tools:

AVISYNTH and Virtualdub/Nandub/Virtualdubmod

I believe graphics packages such as Adobe Premiere and Vegas Video can also handle divx, I'm not entirely sure though.
