IMO, Windows Media Player 7 and up sucks. Its bloated and slow - I'd use dedicated DVD player software (e.g. WinDVD, PowerDVD) and stick with WMP 6.4 for avi's and mpegs.
Is there any way to play an eventual downloaded .mpeg-file that is of the SVCD-format without actually creating a SVCD. I don't see the actual need to burn the file down, since I just want to view it as soon as possible

Thanks for any help...

As long as you have a DVD player software installed in your system, you can play those MPEG-2 files with any media players, including the DVD player software itself.
Do I have to install a specific DVD-player? Because I have a MPEG file that is supposed to be burned into an SVCD, and I have tried to play it from my hard drive on both WMP 9 and RealPlayer, which both should support DVD-playback, but it doesn't work.
If a DVD player is installed, so are the Mpeg2 DirectShow filters. If you want just the filters, try these free ones.

Hey wavesurf- may I ask which MPEG-2 decoder did you find on the web that worked for you? I'd like to try it. I've had a similiar problem with an mpg file that will not play despite installation of the Cyberlink PowerDVD Program and the Elecard MPEG2 Decoder Package 2.0.
Thanks in advance for sharing this info.
< Fixed it. I found an MPEG2 decoder on the web, so now it works. Thanks...>
