tools for dat, dat to avi

Hello, this is my first post & hope this is the right place

    Here is my situation:

I have received 2-3 .dat files that I need to put together and make a whole movie. The quality is not so good and I want the movie that will result be the same quality and if possible the almost the same size.

From my knowledge the best editing tool is VirtualDub so I downloaded the last version.

Now the problem is that I cannot append more that 1 dat files in the timeline of the VirtualDub like you do with avi files and then save the whole files as one film.

Another thing is that I cannot use the "Direct Stream Copy" (if I remember well ) with .dat files.

So the solution is to transform the .dat files in .avi files and the make the movie. The problem is that I cannot find a solution that will not take from the quality of the movie.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance

The dat files are vcd (mpeg-1) files. Virtualdub can decode them, but the mpeg-1 video stream can't be muxed into an avi file. So you have to reencode.
Donate your idle CPU time for something usefull.
