    VHS to DVD

I have many VHS home videos that I would like to put on dvd. I just got a new Sony DVD burner. Where should I start for this? Thanks.

First you need to capture your VHS videos. If you search these forums you'll find numerous ways to do that with freeware in AVI...which for home video is probably all you need. If you want to copy long VHS tapes or movies I have a way to get them sized so you can fit a long movie on one DVD disc...but it's not free or easy.

      Thanks

Thanks much. I'm sure I need some kind of adapter to get VHS video to my computer. Do you think it is worth the time to transfer this video to DVD? Most of my VHS's are games from my athletic days and some are quite long. You know about how long football games are. This is what I would transfer. Thanks

Yes, You need to first buy a video capture card. Pretty much its a card with a coaxile input. You can use it to watch tv on your computer or in your case plug in the vcr and record to your hard drive. They start at $50 for one that records (ATI TV Wonder VE) and go up into the hundreds. The more expensive ones have better quality its just up to how much you want to spend.

            Software

Thanks about the hardware. What software do you use to record to the hard drive? It will probably record as an avi file. Thanks.

setarip gave his method using the freeware virtualdub in the post "ripping VHS" in the beginners forum.
