    How to tell format?

Let's see... there's XviD, DivX, 3ivX, MPEG-4, AVI, etc., etc... I don't think there's a file extention per format.. How do I tell what format a movie file is in? Could poor playback of a file be a result of one player using the wrong codec for the format?

In order to determine which codec(s) you need for a particular .AVI, you should do the following:

    1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDub (or one of its many variants) or NanDub

    2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

(You could also use GSpot to obtain similar information)
