    Alternative to WMP9?

Does anyone know of a player/plugin/codec OTHER than Windows Media Player v9 that will play WM9 format files? Ideally, a codec for WMP v6.4?

          wmp

wmp is a very good quality player.
why do you not want to use it?
          it plays almost everything.
divx player lacks quality (seems beta).
winamp3 is never in sync (seems beta).
          realplayer is propriatory (just sucks)
          quicktime is for mac (obsolete)
wmp2 is my favorite. (late version)
it is located in the wmp9 folder.

WMV basically has been put where only one (now more than one) player would support it. Now-a-days people have to contact MS if they try to add compatability with WMV...

will seems strange, but the old wmp from win3.1 is able to play wm9,
                you'll find it in windows\MPLAYER.EXE .

another thing that i can say is the wm9 audio encoded with sound forge can be played from the 6.4

Well as for the player itself, there's absolutely no real reason to upgrade from WMP6.4... version 9 is just a bloated bunch of useless junk, like integrated web access (thanks, but that's what my browser's for), "visualizations," etc. So apart from the fact that you apparently need it to view files encoded with the WM9 codec, there's no reason to upgrade.

Then there's that part in the license agreement about Microsoft spyware...

                    Aw come on. Pretty please?

And will Quicktime or RealOne really play WM9?

Problem solved. For anyone else's future reference, here's how I did it:

As I said, WMP v9 has built-in Microsoft spyware... but WMP v6.4 or v7.1 don't. Windows offers =THIS= Windows Media 9 codec package, but it only supports WMP versions 7 and newer. I could find no WM9 codecs for WMP v6.4, either by Microsoft or a 3rd party... also could not find any other player that would play WM9 files. So, the only solution is do get WMP v7.1 from =HERE=, then install the above WM9 codec pack. V7.1 does not replace v6.4, so you will now have both. Then you just set the file associations in the respective "Options" menus so that v7.1 plays .wmv/.wma/.asf/etc files, and v6.4 plays .avi/.mpg/.mp3/everything else.

In what content do you wanna use the player. i guess it's just ppl preference. I prefer to use mplayer2 from microsoft. the old type ones. WMP9 is good, probably can do stereo from mono input, like the one in vcd, u know how vcd sometimes encoded using 2 different language with each language on left or right. WMP9 can simulate left language into stereo if i'm not mistaken.

however, the feature of the player being real full screen mode after a few seconds is uncomfortable.

for divx, i would say sasami2k is the best. try to compare it yourself, specially with divx movies from vcd or whatever, the pictures seems different, much smoother, not really blocks like media player ones. just that it has some problem with windows xp (the 1 that i'm using), sometimes it crashes quite a lot. hehehe...

                          how bout this??
