Use SubMux that is included in the VobSub package. You will need a subtitle file that contains the text in the first place though...

Btw, WMP 9? My goodness, didn't you read the reviews on it here? I'll be damned if I ever install that player again!

          virtualdub: http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/do...irtualdub.html
subtitle plug-in:http://www.doom9.org/software.htm#subs ( scroll down to subtitle tools, look for subtitle plugin)
          subtitle workshop: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/..._workshop.html

          installing:
          extract virtualdub
extract content of subtitle plug-in in virtualdub plugin subdirectory
          install subtitle workshop

open srt file in subtitle workshop; save as sub station alpha (ssa)
          virtualdub: open your avi file:
          video-full proccessing mode
video: filters-subtitler (select thr .ssa file)
video-compression: compress it to whatever codec you like (divx, xvid, etc)
          file-save as avi

          WildmanJoe is right, WMP9 sucks
you wouldn't have to re-encode the video stream, would you use such players as BSPlayer, MediaPlayerClassic, CoreMediaPlayer; you can also include multiple subtitles in the avi file (as text, not as image) and use the above mentioned players to cycle through them... but that's not what you asked for...

do you want to edit text/background colors or the text itself?
anyway, choose from the heaps of subtitle tools available on this site: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/...html#subtitles

ps: i made an error in the previous post: you can not include subs as text in avi file, but you certainly can in matroska files...
