Stupid question maybe: DVD movie on CDR?

As the subject says, maybe a stupid question, but:
Is it possible to burn something like a "mini-dvd" on a CD-R disc? I've converted a 30 min movieclip to MPEG2/DVD format (approx 690 MB) and I was hoping it was possible to burn it to a 700MB CD-R and it would be playable on my stand-alone DVD player.
I should add that my player doesnt support SVCD...but VCDs work though so I can use that if the above doesnt work.

tried the above loads of times but if you put a CD-R in the PC it wont let you burn as a dvd because its not a dvd disc unless im mistaken

You are - mistaken, that is.

You simply burn the DVD structure ("AUDIO_TS" and "VIDEO_TS") to a CD-R using the CD (NOT DVD) "data disk" mode.

Unfortunately, standalone DVD players that will recognize such a CD are few and far between...
