i have just bought some cd-rw and my cd-r/rw drive cannot read or write to it. why???

I have had similar problems. The CD-RW discs that I bought were much newer than my old old CD burner (discs produced in 2003, and burner in 1999!). Replacing it with a newer model solved the problem. -
Furthermore Vik_Pa :
Check so you didn't buy CD-RW's with 16-24x ultra-speed. If you
did and if your burner only can burn at 16x, chances are you
have the same problem I had. You cannot burn on those.
Now why Verbatim (among others) have made such a CD-RW
beats me but still ...

ps. then again old CR-RW's that says "16x speed can easily
burn at a higher rate... go figure
