TMPGEnc and Windows XP

My windows xp and tmpgenc freezes and the computer lock up when encoding avi to dvd. The XVID codec is install, the environmental setting (direct show) in tmpgenc are set to the highest priority. I have reinstalled tmpgenc on several occasions. I would appreciate a little help.
