    digitally disappointed?

My wife and I started out in video with a 8mm analog Hitachi seven years ago. We've been impressed with the cameras ease of use and especially its ability to produce usable footage with very little light. I captured into digital from the videotape. Of course the resolution was awful. So yesterday, we went out and got a digital JVC DV800u. 540 lines of resolution with lots of bells and whistles, and very definitely not cheap. Yuk. I requires almost full daylight to get usable images, It's "Night Alive" is a joke as it produces only a jerky sequence of still photos. The stabilization is only about half as good as the old machine, and even in optimum conditions, the output is badly pixelated, both initially and in the final DVD or SVCD. Maybe things with get better as we get used to the camera, or did we screw and make a bad camera choice?
