    DivX resolution problem

Certain resolutions, usually ones proportionate to standard aspect ratios such as 16:9 or 4:3, work while others do not with all of my non-lossless codecs like DivX or XviD. That is to say when I try to crop a video in VirtulDub, producing some random resolution depending on how much i need to crop, the picture in the final video is screwed up. There are diagonal lines going across from the top-right to the bottom-left hand corner, sometimes they're green, sometimes the picture is black and white. Does the resolution need to be defined in multiples of 16 or some other number? Or is there something wrong with the setup on my computer?
