Pioneer DVR-A03 DVD, and DVD Movies

Hey guys,
I have the Pioneer DVR-A03 DVD. If I use SW Ripper, like Smart Ripper, and rip the DVD, and copy it to CD R. Will it work in a DVD player?

it will

only problem is, you will have to spend some time reading guides and tutorials.

rip the data and transcode it to vcd/svcd.

all else can be found at digital digest - in particular nicky's guides.

Will it lose quality by doing it that way. I mean enough to make a difference?
Well, I just did some reading on VCD, and it looks like from what I read, that it is of low quality. Is there not another way, w/ less compression. I was hoping I could just rip the DVD, copy to disc and it work. Is there not a modification that can be done to the player?

the best quality you can get is using an mpeg4 format => avi

avis, however, cannot be played on a standalone

svcd is the next best thing (apart from xvcd) that some players (not all) can play

worst is vcd.

Why will not just copying the DVD, after being ripped to the DVD R not work. I loooked around, but not really found anything to answer that. I read somewhere that most DVDR's, the first few sectors are pre recorded, and prevent you from copying DVD movies to them. Is that true, and is there other protection?
