How to determine what type a file is?

Is there a program that will determine what kind of video codec a movie requires, i have a movie that is not playing and i am trying to fix it but I am not sure how to. I losded it in Gspot and it said not valid AVI. Can anyone suggest a program that can help?

    Try Virtualdub's File Information.

Try opening in TMPGEnc or even some proprietary players, like Quicktime or RealPlayer.

          go to folder options
          click the view tab
uncheck " hide file extensions of known type"
this should let you see the file extension, ie avi, mov, mpeg, etc.
          hopefully this will help
