VCD in DVD player won't work

Firstly, I have looked through the forum and can't find anything that can really help me, and secondly, i know this probably isn't the right place to post this, but there were so many forums and a lot looked dead, so i headed for here .

The other day i downloaded a movie file. I split the sound from the video with virtualdub, then encoded it as a VCD with TMPGEnc. I then split the file that was left into two parts, so that I could fit them on CD's (the mpeg was about 1gig).

After burning part 1 of these with Nero, I shoved it in my DVD player (a TV one, not in my computer), but got a lot of squiggly lines - no picture at all. Note: i did get sound.

Anyone got any ideas with what's wrong?
the other day i burned a VCD of a south park episode and that worked fine, but this wont. NOTE: my DVD player is a Voxson DVD250, and, according to www.dvdrhelp.com it is compatible with VCD's.

I've tried to include any information that may be relevant/helpful in solving my problem, but if there's anything specific you need to know ask away.

    thanks in advance,
    jack

Can you view the MPEG files on your computer? Do they conform to the (S)VCD standard?
