ripping dvds?

Is it legal to rip a dvd (one which i bought) to my pc and convert it to mpeg format?

I think that as a legal owner of a copy, you are entitled under normal copyright to backup the media for your own personal use.
Some manufacturers seem to take great umbrage at that principle but I think in general, it stands.
Please correct me if I'm wrong?

enchanter do you know of any web sites that state this/have info on the subject. its just that i am doing a project which requires details about the matter
