    copy part of xvid file

I've got a large xvid movie, how can I copy for instance the last 5 minutes into another file ? Is there any particular software program I need to do this ?

First of all, make certain that you have all required codecs (both video and audio) installed. Also, understand that the two videos MUST BE IDENTICAL in all video and audio aspects.

Cutting with VirtualDub (or any of its variants)

1)Load your original (DivX-compressed or otherwise) .AVI into VirtualDub
    2) Set BOTH "Video" and "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copying"
    3) Move slider to the starting point of the scene you wish to delete
    4) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Go to next keyframe"
    5) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection Start"
    6) Move slider to the ending point of the scene you wish to delete
    7) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Go to next keyframe"
    8) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection End'
    9) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Delete frames"
    10) Save with a new filename

Joining two .AVIs can be accomplished in VirtualDub (or any of its variants) by simply:

    1) Loading the first file and then, from the "File" dropdown menu selecting "Append .AVI segment" and loading the second file.

    2) Set BOTH "Video" and "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copy"

    3) Save with a new filename

Then simply use ONLY the directions I've provided for "Cutting" to delete all but the 5 minutes you want to save as a NEW video - then, from the "File" dropdown menu, save with a new filename...

Thanks for your reply. I figured it out straight after posting on here. Unfortunately the bloody audio is out of sync so the file is useless.

            My pleasure ;>}

"Unfortunately the bloody audio is out of sync"

            1) Load the original video file into VirtualDub (or one of its many variants) or NanDub

            2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

            3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (BOTH video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

                BEFORE cutting your clip,

Using VirtualDubMOD to Convert "VBR" .MP3 to Uncompressed .WAV

                1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDubMOD (a different program than the standard VirtualDub)

                2) From the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Direct Stream Copy"

                3) From the "Streams" dropdown menu, select "Stream List" - and rightclick on the audio stream, then select "Full Processing Mode" - then click on "OK"

                4) From the "File" dropdown menu, save with a new filename

Thanks again for your brilliant answer setarip The audio sounds very much in sync now. One thing though, after following your step-by-step instruction I noticed that my file now has increased in size from about 700mb to 1600mb. Is there anyway to decrease the size of the file without messing up the audio ?

                  This is much appreciated.

The size increase is due solely to the fact that the audiostream was converted to Uncompressed PCM (.WAV) format. If you'd like, you can now use VirtualDubMOD (or even the standard VirtualDub) to convert the audio to .MP3 - Just make certain to, from the "Video" dropdown menu, set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copy"

I couldnt find .mp3 in audio compression list. Is there any way to add it to the list ? I used Mpeg layer 3 with 48k/bits 24kHz, stereo and 6kb/s which seems good enough at first look but I dont really know if thats the best choice. The file did decrease to about 650mb so that very nice. What type and options would you recommend from the below list :

The list consist of the following types :
                      ACELP.net
                      CCITT A-law
                      CCITT U-law
                      Divc audio v2
                      dsp group truespeech
                      gsm 6.10
                      IAC2
                      IMA ADPCM
                      Microsoft ADPCM
                      Microsoft G.723.1
                      Mpeg layer-3
                      Ogg Vorbis (mode1 - mode3+)
Windows media audio v1 and v2

.MP3 is the SAME as MPEG Layer 3...

So I actually picked the correct format then. Any particular parameter I should set it to ? 24khz and 48kbit ?
