Playing avi files

I have Windows Media player 6.4 , I cannot play some avi files downloaded from the net. I don't get any error but there is no picture or audio. Can I use any other player for avi or should I upgrade to 7.0 (which I don't want to).

Any help appreciated

I have installed 3.X and 4.X Divx codecs. Is there anything else I need to install.

Maybe MS MP4 V1-3, but I think divx3.11 and 4.x are the ones most people use. But I don't download movies myself, so my knowledge is only second hand.
