avi video playback problems

all of my video playbacks for avi format look like the video is a checkerboard? I have downloaded various codecs, etc and also started using Windows media player 6.4, but have had no success - mpegs and other video formats play fine?

Any ideas or resolution steps would be swell!

I dunno how to fix it, but I think the problem is maybe the resolution is pretty crappy.

Assuming that you've not created any of these .AVIs yourself - and thay might have been created using any number of different codecs, I'd suggest you download and install the FFDShow filter - then reboot your system - then try playing in Windows Media Player v.6.4...
