DVD Players play DVD's but Playstation 2 won't?

I have a portable Polaroid DVD player and a Sony DVD player - both play my back-ups fine. My problem is my Playsation 2 will not play them. Any ideas why?

PS2 is a horid DVD player and the drive is not the best either.

Anyway are you burning DVD+ discs? the PS2 can not read those if you are.
