    DVD region Free ?

    Hey everyone,

The thing is, I just bought a new DVD without consulting the very very small print at the back of the DVD box that says PAL DVDs. Which my DVD player would not play.

Now I placed it into my DVD-ROM and it flashed a "Please insert disk into Drive". My DVD ROM is a LG DRD8160B 48X. So I followed the directions for the firmware and "turned it into a region free DVD-ROM" When I use the CDVDinfo, it just says that my current region is none. But my DVD region is still locked.

SO I guess my million dollar question is just:

Did I buy a screwed up DVD or did the region free firmware not work?

    Mac.

Oh, BTW, I'm also using the PowerDVD XP player which also tells me to insert disk.

theres multiple region checks some times.

Your DVD drive has a hardware region lock (now disabled) and theres a region lock thats software that is a part of windows I bealive and theres definitly a software region lock in comercial DVD player apps like WinDVD and Power DVD.

You should be able to play the DVD in something like BS Player or Zoom Player though if the hardware region lock on yer DVD drive is realy disabled though.

I managed to unlock my drive. But when I play it on PowerDVD it still says I need to put a disk in. So I run DVD genie at the background. Ain't workin.

Try other program. even try Windows Media Player. WinDVD and Power DVD have software region checks (you can change it in there options screens). There region checking supercides yer drives region check. Even if the drive is properly region free these players stil have there region checks enabled.

WinDVD Tweaker can disable the region checks on WinDVD but I am not aware of a PowerDVD equivilant.

Dont forget to try and chage the region setting in PowerDVD to. You have a limited number ofchanges before the programlocks it so be carfull not to get it locked on some crazy region you wont use as often . I'll guess yer DVD is region 2.

                Indeed it is.

I just tried it with Zoom Player, same outcome, "No DVD Found."

I've got 1 change left and my Current status is now at Region 2. Now I'm gonna be in trouble. My DVD is originally Region 1. The thing is I'd play it on my other DVD players if they supported the Region 2 PAL format...

i'm not sure why it is saying no DVD found now. are you able to access it in like windows explorer or anything at all? If you can then you proly can rip it with DVD Shrink or something and watch it off yer hardd rive.

I was thinking youment it was asking for a proper region disc to be inserted.

Have you tried plaing discs that worked before you made the drive region free?

yep, I've tried my other DVDs on the DVD Rom they'd play coz they're in NTSC. This one ( i have no idea why the hell they would sell as PAL in Canada), just won't be read. I have no idea why. I can't access it from anywhere not even in my regular CD rom drive.

Now my NTSC dvds can't play after the switch due to apparently "an unsupported Format" even when the CDVDinfo says that my DVD region is unlocked.

Them being PAL or NTSC realy dosnt matter much on a PC (It does with TV and console DVD players though). The region would mater still though.

Will your region 1 discs play proper if you change PowerDVD back to region 1?

It all should be working by the sound of things and I havent got any ideas why it wouldent. Is there anything about this region 2 DVD you bought that looks suspisios like it may be a bootleg or something?

Somone else here might know somehting that may help you but I cant figure out why it wouldent work right.

It could be bootlegged... But the other disks I bought from this store could be played on the Comp or rather, the comp could read it. That's why I was confused as to why this one wasn't able to register as a CD or DVD on either of my CD and DVD roms.

if it's from a lagit store then it's probly not a bootleg. if it;s something like a out of the way small little show that deals in used movies and games and stuff then thats possable but not very likley (Could just be an import DVD they got hold of). I realy havent a clue why a lagit store in Canada would have a PAL DVD though.

If it is a bootleg it could be a bad disc however.

                              DVD's are fun...
