Just a quick update. I have now found more DVDs that pause and freeze on this Toshiba, and I'm done negotiating with it. I'm going to return it, if it's possible. I took my "problem DVDs" into Circuit City today and tested them on the JVC HRXVC33U DVD/VCR combo, which does pretty much all the same things this Toshiba unit does. They were happy to hook it up to a TV and let me play them. Each of the problem DVDs played flawlessly on this JVC. I will get that one after I am sure the Toshiba can be returned.

Hopefully after all the problems you've had, I hope this new one you're getting will do the job for you. You must have just been hitting a bad batch of dvd players because I have not had anywhere near the problems you've had, even on a relatively cheap one that I bought at Walmart. It plays my dvds pretty well for the most part. Good luck on your purchase.

I Had problems with two Toshibas
Same model, two different machines. They did the same thing yours is doing. The repair shop said it was something to do with the heat sink or something like that.
Go to a place that runs DVDs all day like Virgin, Blockbuster and ask them what type they use. I won't say what I bought - don't want to jinx myself, but that's how I picked the replacement unit. Quite frankly I would go with Virgin's pick. Branson is picky about how his stores runComment

Me too. I have been driven nearly insane trying to fix the skipping/freezing DVD problem on our Toshiba SD-V391 VHS/DVD player. I've tried everything I've read about: Maxell Thunderon Lens Cleaner CD, unplugging to allow "reset", new DVDs, blown air to disperse dust, disassembled the DVD assembly and cleaned the tracks and applied isopropyl alcohol to the laser lens... same same. No improvement. I think the underlying problem here is that some cheap DVD players are, how you say, pieces of junk.
Those who advise forgoing the grief and buying yourself a new one have a point, but it's always easy to spend other people's money.Comment

Simple Solution
Sorry peeps, but DVD players are like women. When they start giving too much crap, chuck 'em away and get another. A lot less aggravation doing it this way. Forget about the cost and think about this: How much is your time and patience worth? A helluva lot more then a stupid DVD player.Comment

DVD Freezing
I have done a lot of testing to try to fix this freezing problem since I show DVDs in the classroom. My students give me hell over this problem. I have gone through all the cleaning steps/suggestions without success, here is some additional information:
1. My DVD ran without any problem on DVD machine #1.
2. On machine #2 freezing started to occur, and got worse as the day went on, with this 2nd machine, and by the time I got to my 7th period class showing, it completely froze.
3. Showing this DVD on computer/laptop has never enountered this problem of freezing
4. Freezing problem occurs on every manufacturer of DVDs I have tried in the last 2 years.
Help:
1. Are there some options I can/should select when making DVDs? (I am editing out comercials and burning DVDs using Roxio Media Creator 10 Software)
2. Has anyone had success taking a DVD that was skipping on one manufacturer's player and have it run consistent good on another? (this may the point a previous post was making, but I was not sure.)
Thank you.Comment
