Could someone please help me? I have been trying to record or capture a vhs to my hard drive. I have a vcr ran to my computer and I can watch vhs but when I try to capture the movie I always get an error file is too large about half way through the process. I am very new and know I am doing something wrong, but can't figure out what. I have read through the forums, but even the simple post confuse me. Can anyone point me in the direction in laymans terms? Thanks for any help!

what os are you running ? are you using fat 32 or ntfs. fat 32 will only support up to 4gb file. what format are you saving to, mpeg 1/2 or avi uncompressed. uncompressed will get real large real quick. -
WIN XP I think it is ntfs, I am not sure what format I have been using ulead 7 where would I go to change the format or do I need a different program. I also have dvdx maker if that will work.Comment

First check if your're using NTFS you can see that from "My conputer" left click on you hdd for example C: click properties nad there you'll se File System: NTFS or File System: FAT32 if you're using FAT32 then you may have a problem with files larger than 2GB, depending on the qualty you're capturing this file can get really large up to 30GB for 1 1/2 hr. In the case of using FAT32 i'm not sure if there is a solution. You can switch to NTFS where you won't have any problems of large files, here is a link how to do it
the problem can also be that you don't have enough disk space, or that the program that you're using to capture doesn't support files larger than 2GB, i've never used the program you've mentioned. Try also to capture for less time to see if that goes ok.Comment

I think you'll find the FAT32 problem arises at 4GB. How are you capturing ( capture card or external hardware device) and what kind, specifically? What software are you using to capture? If it's ULead VS7 and you aren't capturing DV (which can be captured as MPEG2) you have to be using one of those USB 1.1 320X240 el cheapo triangular AVI devices (since ULead doesn't make an MPEG2 capture device) which any editor will capture (because it's format is in DirectShow)...which means low-quality capture in large AVI files. I checked and it is ntfs with a 120 hard drive nothing external. The video card may need updating it is ati radeon 32 mb. what program should I use, or what all programs do I need total?Comment

I'm told the high end Snazzi cards are pretty good. I don't know your card...but you should be able to capture with ULead VS7 in MPEG2 format...am I correct?Comment

yes I did capture the movie but when I play it back it has some sort of code or wall thing across it and there is no sound. I did it as a mpeg, is that wrong?Comment

No...that's what you should be doing. Look and see which field it says it's capturing first....if it says it's capturing (A) top field first change it to (B) bottom field first or vice versa. A fellow using VS7 to capture VHS said this worked for him a while back.Comment

Is your video card the AIW? if so you should be able to use ATI MMC. that is what I use with my AIW 9000 pro. I have Ulead video studio 6 and Pinnacle studio 8 and MMC is far better with the AIW cards. I capture mpeg2 all the time without any problems. I use full D1 (720x480) for digital cable and 1/2 D1 (352x480) for regular tv and vhs capture and the results are really good. Do some reading here for excellent guides on video capture using ATI cards. www.lordsmurf.com
