Why cant I play my DVD?

Ok, I have a new laptop and every time i try to play a movie (dvd ofcourse) it says I need a decoder.
the files on the dvd are .iof, .buf and .vob.
What do I need to do?
Do i need a decoder if so where can I get it and how much does it cost?

Purchase a software DVD player, such as WinDVD or PowerDVD...

I am not sure(as i have PowerDVD), but i think Media Player Classic should be able to plays vob's etc.. and its free, so give it a try:

Doom9.org used to (still does?) have a link for a free dvd player "Eugene's dvd player", you can set Win. Media Player as default dvd player after you install Eugene's?

Yes you have to have a software DVD decoder before it will play in any software such as WMP Classic.

I just played a vob using WMP classic and it was using its own 'mpeg2 video decoder', so it doesn't use the cyberlink dvd decoder which is installed.
So you can just use wmp Classic on its own.

WMP "uses various "codecs", etc., from other softwares, to play many things (if set as default player).

...So you should be able to use it on its own without the use of commercial software such as PowerDVD as its uses its OWN dvd decoder, though you do have the option to use an external one.

If you play alot of DVD's on your pc its worth getting PowerDVD, but i recommend trying a trial version first.

I have both and I used to like WinDVD a lot more. Now with the newest PowerDVD it kicks ass. So many quality options

Threadstarter did say "...just got new laptop." Doubtful "Classic" has been installed.
