Virtual Dub Help!!

Hello i am brand new to this forum but need some help....i have an avi file i need to put into virtualdub...when i try to open the file virtualdub says gives me an error saying, " Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'vifp'

then it says, "virtualdub requires a video for windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. directshow codecs, such as those used by windows media player, are not suitable.

what can i download or do to make this work?

any help is appreciated.
