Newbie: mp4 to SVCD conversion

Can anyone help?

I'm trying to convert an mp4 video file to a SVCD to play in DVD player.
Is there a program that will do this in one go?

Or do I have to convert it to an .avi and then onto the SVCD?

any ideas much needed

strange! second request today to convert from mp4!

Not ever done it myself but you could give TMPGEnc a look (different to TMPGEnc DVD Author)

I have heard that just using TMPGEnc would cause problems with the video / audio sync,
so I though maybe converting to AVI using NANDUB, and then converting the AVI to SVCD using TMPGEnc, do you think this sounds good?, or is it too much work,

If I have time I will try both and post the results...

Well if your'e going to do that you are likely to experience a noticable drop in quality. If you decide to continue I would use GordianKnow or DVX for the mp4->avi conversion.

If VirtualDubMod can open the mp4 file then i suggest you set the video and audio to 'Direct Stream Copy' and save it as an avi. You will then be able to use this avi to create a svcd via TMPEnc.

The only program that would open mp4 is TMPEnc Nothing else would open the MP4 file, I tried using Nero 6 as it seems to be quicker, (Nero = 4 hours conversion, and TMPEnc would take 17 hours)
So I tried Nero, and lo and behold, I have ended up with a lovely DVD menu, and nothing else - just a blank screen with no audio for the duration of the file.

As I'm fairly new to this can someone tell me if it IS possible to do this converstion at all, or do I have to wait for mp4 video to become more of a standard?

any advice, graetly received..

1) Open it in *TMPGEnc* and create a project file (*.trp).

2) Then with THIS file convert/parse it with *VFAPI* to create a 'fake' avi (http://www.divx-digest.com/software/vfapi.html)

3) Take the created (fake) avi and use your favourite program to encode it.

mp4 files container mpeg-4 video (as it is produced by divx5 for example)

you can use mp4ui to extract the mpeg-4 video stream from the .mp4 file to .avi without quality loss and than reencode with any tool which handles .avi files
