    DV Capture problem

    hi,

I just tried to capture a DV scene, but i noticed some horizontal lines on the edges of persones, I can only see these when there is a movement of the camera, i mean during moving scenes,
I tried to capture in Ulead VS7, premiere 6, and windows movie maker so the problem is not the software, or maybe a setting, but in premiere i tried bottom, top, pas, ntsc, no differece!!!
    somebody ever had this problem?
I save the captured DV in a AVI and play it in WMPlayer

    thx

You have an interlaced source. I suggest you deinterlace during the encoding process.

Look here for a more detailed explanation and solution.

I just continued investigating, but not only the captured video had this line problem, even when I play the DV video in premiere, the lines are present, so?? bad cable or still interlace problem?
      gonna try a deinterlacer...

The link i posted shows exactly what an interlaced source looks like. Its probably interlaced as its a capture and cos of the horizontal lines. PAL can still also be interlaced.

Not sure what you mean. Theirs not a specific program that just deinterlaces. It is done through the process of (re)encoding e.g. in TMPGEnc.

Ok I could get it to work, I captured with Premiere, then encoded with Tmpeg DVD source, very easy, and the quality seems very close to the DV.
now I have to learn gettingon with premiere.
                thx for your help everybody

                  Hi,

I've got a problem with DV Capturing. At the beginning of the tape it has better qality. Than there are squares and the avi file is unenjoyable (poor quality). Could it be a problam, than we see a lot of times the tape? I'm working with Sonic Foundry Vegas, but the problem is the same in Scenalyser Live too.

Sorry for the bad english,I'm from Hungary. I hope, you understand me.

                  Thanx : -denisz-

Old tapes usually play "jittery" when they go bad (Pinacle Studio9 claims to be able to correct this.) I believe the "squares" you see is "pixcellation"...and usually occurs on capture when the bitrate is too high. See if there's an adjustment in your capture software and reduce the bitrate of capture by 1000kbps and see if it doesn't improve.

From what I've seen, old tapes are usually poor from the start, due to failing to track properly. They sometimes improve further into the tape.

Glad to know you got it sorted. Good luck with premiere.

This is not an old tape. I search on tape with play+rewind (so with picture : > + >> ). This make on the screen not pixels, larger squares when I do that. Is it possible that this procedure made a damage on the tape?

                          Sorry for the bad english.

There's a fair chance that speeding up the playback and running the tape faster past the head will wear it out quicker - a sad fact about these 'contacting' recording media. The tape is rather fragile, hence the popularity in transferring this to digital media.

I had similar problem - sqares of pixels appearing in playback, especially during rewind. In my case it was camcorder head failure. I tried to use head cleaner tape, that didnt help, and I took my camcorder to warranty service where it was repaired and
                              works again just fine.
I think those tapes which had these pixel squares cannot be recovered because they are recorded that way.
