question about CPU used by players

    Hello,

I'm a bit surprised by the differences in CPU use by different players. For example, for a movie i had, Windows Media Player would use an average of 60 %, 40 % for The Playa, and less than 10 % when played in VirtualDub.
The video and audio would freeze for a short time every 3-4 seconds with WMP (when rendering key frames i suppose), but would play perfectly with the 2 others, just because of that CPU difference.
Unfortunately, i find WMP very useful, since it can play almost anything.

So, i'd like to know if u know of a player that is both CPU-efficient and that can play a wide range of formats.
Also, if u have technical explanations, or links to articles about that subject (i haven't found any good study about this yet), i'd be glad to check them out.

    Thanks,

    Ozymandias

try sasami2k player, it s like wmp but has nice layout and usability (i love it)

normally all divx content should be played well too, but sometimes u better use the playa for divx videos

      Hi,

Thanks for the link. The design and options of that player are pretty cool indeed !

Which WMP version are you using? I tend to stick with the old 6.4, which uses less CPU cycles than 7, and is more configurable IMO.

PowerDivX by BlackSun is worth mentioning too, though I'm sure many others would prefer the Playa.

Personally, I use Yeahplayer. I did use GDIVX. They have the same functionality as WMP. However, I use them, largely because I have an old system. By scaling down the resolution to 640x320 I get better playback than in WMP 6.4
