Can't view DVDs or XVIDs or DIVX etc ..Pls help

    Hi all
Since I formatted my HDD run on XP Pro, I've been unable to view any videos (DVDs or divx or xvid) on my PC . First when I attempted to install the codecs I was using before I formatted I received the following error messages :
with the ACE bundle for XP pro : error 1931. The windows installer service cannot update the system file
C:\windows\system32\msrle32.dll because the file is protected by windows. You may need to update r operating system for this program to work correctly (I installed all the windows updates available though)
    with the NIMO codecs:
    Error opening file for writing
    c:\windows\system32\msvcr70.dll.
Then I found and installed other codecs and used codec_sniper to remove all broken codecs. Now I can hear the soundtracks, but I still have a black screen instead of the picture! And G-Spot keeps telling me that I have all the codecs I need to read all my files!
I've also reinstalled my graphic card (a radeon 9200 series), have tried other software but no luckthere either !
Now I don't know what else to try. I really need your help.
Sorry for this long message, but I thought you'd be able to help me better if you had all the details. And thank you in advance

Whenever I see DivX or XviD I think of ffdshow. It seems synonymous ... and it's all I know on the subject!
This isn't a learning curve ... this is b****y mountaineering!
