What does this message really mean?

I made an image file then pressed the eject button on the DVD burner & got the message that 'The device was removed. Files which were loaded from this devise will be lost'. What does the message really mean since it was an image file & that file is still on my hard drive.

Sounds like you ejected before the disc was finalized...and it may not play, play right, or if it does play you may not be able to copy the files from it back to a HDD.

It was only an image that was being prepared. Finializating only occurs after a disk is burned.
