    Capturing existing hi8mm tapes

Dear All, A newbie question. I have 27 hours of 10-year old hi8mm video tapes. I wish to convert them one by one to digital form as "row data" without any compression keeping the maximum detail quality. Storage space is no problem. CPU is 2.4ghz and memory 1Giga ddr. I have Aeolus NVIDIA capture card with WDM and firewire. Once a tape is digitized then I have various possibilities for authoring making them DVDs etc. But from experienced people I wish to know what is the best format and using what tool to start with. I wish to have this original lossless format so that afterwards I can pick up the best tool for authoring. Help is welcome. Thanks.

Using "Virtual Dub" you can capture to "Raw" uncompressed AVI. That would be the best way to retain a lossless format. Later on you could convert the raw AVI to mpeg using an encoding program such as "TMPGEnc" or "TMPGEnc Plus" for the sake of authoring to DVD.

      Capturing and converting

Thanks for the reply. VirtualDub looses many frames in my machine. Would you recommend something similar to get a good result? Is it necessary to convert it to MPEG2 before or after editing?

"Would you recommend something similar to get a good result?"

You stated in your initial post that you have a NVIDIA capture card. Usually capture cards and devices are bundled with software packages that will enable you to convert your source to a digital video format. Is that true in your case?

"Is it necessary to convert it to MPEG2 before or after editing?"

Not necessarily so if you just want to "Edit", but again you stated in your first post that you wished to author the files to DVD so the file(s) would have to be DVD-compliant mpegs in order for an authoring application to accept them.
