What the f*** are you discussing about???? I don't get the picture???
Zip is good: do you all knew you can zip text-documents up to 90%???
And the users don't have to pay for webspace. Are do you all wish to pay for sites likes www.divx-digest.com??
I have heard that the tiolet water spins in the opposite direction to the one on the other hemispehere. I have no idea, though, as to which direction the water spins here, as my toilet simply flushes down and not spins.
As for the real topic, zipping is very good when you have a whole bundle of software, which could do well with some zipping up and even better if most of the files are compressible.
The biggest problem with Optus broadband is that it isn't available everywhere - in fact, if I lived in the next suburb, it won't be available. If you already have Optus local telephone and/or cable TV available, then you should be able to get broadband connection (and if you sign up to all 3, you get some sort of discount as well).
I have a feeling it won't be available at where you live either, although you can use Optus@Home's (that's what their Broadband service is called) official website here to check availability :
The pricing is also listed there. Currently, it is about $AUD 70 per month (that's $USD 35), and while there are no specific bandwidth limits, you must use within 10 times the network average, which is about 20 to 30 GB per month (I rarely use over 3 GB). There are also no download speed caps - I have downloaded at 600 KB/s before, but most downloads from fast sites are at around 100 to 200 KB/s. Unfortunately, there is a upload limit of 12 KB/s, probably there to prevent people from hosting websites using this connection.
ADSL is not available yet, I think.
For those that are interested, compare this to Telstra's broadband service that compares best with Optus@home's standard/basic plan :
10 GB per month bandwidth, uncapped speed for "only" $AUD 339.95 per month. According to people I know who use it, their network is down frequently and speed is very slow.
Not only that, Telstra is also responsible for several unethical business pratices, including rigging internet polls in their favour :
ZDNET news and advice keep professionals prepared to embrace innovation and ready to build a better future.
They were also in the spotlight recently for having being partly responsible for the death of a child whose house phone was broken, and Telstra refused to fix it because it would have cost them too much. The boy had an athma attack and because they lived in the country side, his father had to travel miles to find a phone and call for an ambulance. The boy died before the ambulance arrived. The boy's mother had begged Telstra for ten days to fix the phone, because of her son's medical conditions.
Just yesterday, there was a story about Telstra cancelling a woman's mobile phone account because they found out she had cancer, and it was easier to get money from a person still alive, than from a dead person.
It's best to just forget this little argument here. Somebody thoughtlessly sneered at something that is still largely in use and I hope he has learned not to do that ever again.
Lot of Australians here... I'm from Denmark but I've just been in Australia for 6 months... I was in a rather small town called Hervey Bay in QLD... anyone from around there?
