If you are attempting to convert AVIs for the purpose of playback on a conventional DVD standalone player, do the following:

        1. Convert the AVI file(s) to a DVD compliant mpeg-2 file using "TMPGEnc" or "TMPGEnc Plus". Use the DVD template (NTSC or PAL) from the “Project Wizard” to help you accomplish the task.

        2. Then use "TMPGEnc DVD Author" (different than "TMPGEnc") to author the newly created mpeg-2 into a DVD-related file structure. (.IFO, .BUP, .VOB). As an alternative, you can use "DVDLab" to author as well.

        3. If the combined filesize of the project exceeds 4.37 Gig, use "DVD Shrink" or similar transcoding program to compress.

        4. Use "Nero" or similar burning program to burn onto a DVD (r, rw) disk.

Yes, it's quite simple with the right software.

In what way are you achieving bad results with the audio?

Refer to the first suggestion in my initial posting to this thread:

but y is it that some movies i try to convert show that they are alot longer than they really are? only some movies have this problem! say the movie is 135 minutes long, it might say its 215 minutes long and will not fit on the dvd?
