can you split th audio and video of an avi file?

i have a problem. i have a rip of a movie, but the audio and video tracks arn't seperate, so i can't convert the file from avi to mpeg 2. what do you suggest i do? can i split the two?

1) You don't have to separate the video and audio track in order to convert an .AVI to MPEG-2

2) Do you want to only convert it to MPEG-2, or ultimately to a DVD?

i want to ultimatly put it onto dvd, so don't i have to convert the AVI to a MPEG 2?

the converter i was trying to use is TMPGEnc. the program says that i need to have either a video file or an audio file, so when i choose the video file to convert it says can't open or unsupported. i don't know what the issue is, so i figured it was that i didn't have seperate video and audio

The "issue" is most likely the audio format of the .AVI file

1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDub (or any of its variants) or NanDub

2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box


The audiostream is probably in either .AC3 format or Variable Bitrate MPEG Layer 3 (VBR .MP3).

If it proves to be .AC3:

In TMPGEnc, under the "Environmental Settings" "VFAPI plugin" tab rightclick on the "Direct Show Multimedia Reader" and increase to one greater than the highest priority of listed items.. This will enable TMPGEnc to accept a properly encoded .AVI with .AC3 audio for input...


If it proves to be VBR:

Simply use VirtualDubMOD (Different than standard VirtualDub), to save the audio stream as an Uncompressed PCM (WAV) file as follows:
Using VirtualDubMOD to Convert "VBR" .MP3 to Uncompressed .WAV

1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDubMOD (a different program than the standard VirtualDub)

2) From the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Direct Stream Copy"

3) From the "Streams" dropdown menu, select "Stream List" - and rightclick on the audio stream, then select "Full Processing Mode" - then click on "OK"

4) From the "File" dropdown menu, save the .AVI with a new filename

ok theres one problem, virtualdub says that it can't find the decopressor for format 'div3.' this is the whole context of its message

so i can't even open the rip in virtualdub or mod
