VHS to DV Archive Advice

I have VHS tape that I'm worried is wearing out, and would like to back it up to DV-AVI.

Would I get better results (quality) by first dubbing it from the VCR to my Sony DCR-HC40 and then capturing to my PC, or would it be better to use the camcorder as a pass-through and capture directly from the VCR?
