    VHS 2 mpeg conversion question for PROs

    Hello.
    I'm trying to convert some old VHS tapes to mpeg format, so I could watch them from a CD at a TV and/or a PC monitor.
    My PC config. is: P4 1.5G, 512M RDRam, 210G HDDs, Asus 7700 deluxe, Pinnacle DC30 Video I/O card, DV (firewire)card. OS - WinMe. Premiere 6.01. LSX Mpeg suite (stand alone and integrated in Prem6). Avi_IO.
    I've captured a movie several times in "chunks" of 2M at bitrates between 3500 - 4500. Got 12G - 20G footage at 720x540. I intend to use it on full screen - so I thought it's better to capture it this way. I put all the "chunks" on the timeline of Prem6 and tried to export them to movie using the LSX.
    Here are the problems...
    1. I got a huge .mpg file between 2.2G to 3G, - so I have to burn an 1 hour movie on 4 cd's.... that it's not logic...
    2. When there are movements on the movie I get them truncated,
    i.e. got "lines" from the moving parts and not a smooth motion.

    I read a lot of Q and A from this forum (and other forums) and couldn't find an answer what is the best thing to do. Should I use Divx conversion after doing the mpeg2?
    What I need is an expert answer, step by step guide...

      why u dont capture directly using divx 3 or mpeg4v2 video codec and mp3 audio codec? and why u take 720x540, try 352x288 instead, quality is still great in full screen mode

      best u have a try with freeVCR recording
      codecs u should have installed:
      1) microsofts codec update
      2) divx 3.11 alpha
      3) radium mp3 codec

          The reason I can't capture directly using divx 3 or mpeg4v2 video codec and mp3 audio codec is that Pinnacles DC30 card (the worst card and support I've ever meet....) is that it has it's own codec - an oldie MJPEG codec - and I cannot use anything else for capture. I'm doing it with AVI_IO (great proggie) that allows me to capture chunks without dropped frames - so I could leave the VCR working for a whole tape, and getting as result X files of desired lengh.
          Thanx anyway

          BTW, why using Divx 3.11 instead of 4.12 ?

              -so why dont you convert this mpeg file into mpeg4 using virtualdub or nandub by means of frameserving in case the format cannot be opened directly in vd/nandub?

              the frameserving part could be like this:

              - open your mpegfile in dvd2avi => save project

              - open this d2v file in either gordianknot to save it avs
              or convert this d2v into a pseudo-avi using vfapi

              - now loaing either the avs or pseudoavi in vd/nandub to be able to change the video compression to mpeg4

                  Chinese for me....
                  Please, if you can, be more specific, as I don't understand for example what is vfapi....
                  Please, if it does't bother you... step by step....
