    TMPGEnc problem

Hi all, I am very new to this and need some help. I have an .avi file and was trying to encode to mpeg using TMPGEnc as I understand this is the first step before authoring. But when I try to load my avi file I get this error message: File...avi cannot open or unsupported.
only my already converted mpeg files are able to load. is there another way of doing this or another program, perhaps an all in one that would let me burn also?
thanx in advance all, happy holidays!

    1) Load the original video file into VirtualDub (or one of its many variants) or NanDub

    2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

    3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (BOTH video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

I am sorry I dont know what VirtualDub is?
Is there another program I can you to encode these avi files? I read somewhere that nero 6 ultra lite will encode?
also, I want to burn this using a regular cd-rw burner and cd-r since I don't have a dvd burner
      thanx

ok, I got the results for 3 diff .avi files:
          1. Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'DIV3'(Microsoft High-speed MPEG-4 V3 [Hack: Divx Low-Motion])
VirtualDub requires a video for windows(VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. Directshow codecs such as those used by Windows media player, are not suitable.

          2.Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'DIVX'(DivX 4+)
          Virtual......same as above

          3.Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'MP42'(Microsoft High-speed MPEG-4 V2).

You have to download and install the required video codecs that you've listed...

(The "DIV3" requires the DivX v.3.11alpha codec)

I have downloaded WinMPG video converter V3.1, can I just use that to convert the files? then once converted can I burn using nero or must I author first?

I have no personal knowledge of that software...

DivX codec v5.2.1 (Windows XP/2000) and XviD codec v1.0.3 from http://www.divxmovies.com/software/

                    Re-read 3) CAREFULLY:

                    2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"
