"what should i buy if i am backing up dvd movies?"

Your only concern should be which format works with your burner and the standalone DVD player(s) that will be used to play them.

(The difference is their physical format [invisible to you, the user] - and DVD-Rs can hold a miniscule 6 Mbs more data than can DVD+Rs)

      Difference between the two: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view.php/2279

Find out which format is compatible with your stand alone DVD player and DVD burner, so you know what format to buy:

      DVD Burner: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters

You're Very Welcome!...........Nope, every DVD player is going to be different. Most older stand alone DVD players play -R, since -R came out first. But, thats not always the case. Check the "Specs" of the DVD player before you purchase it, or ask a salesman. Better yet, burn some movies on both formats, -R and +R to disc, then take the disk with you to the store, and try them out on there display models.
