mosaic-ing on the screen

My dvd player only seems to play DVD's that are Dolby-mono. At least these are the only ones I can get to work. All other DVD's have a lot of mosaic-ing on the screen and also white streaks through the picture. Does anyone know what causes this and how to fix it?

A few things to check : can your dvd player play dvd's from different regions ie. muli-region ? are you trying to play dvds that are from different areas of the world ? Most DVD's can be made multi-region
Check that both TV and DVD are set to either NTSC or PAL

Also how have you got your DVD Player hooked to your TV ? Through a Video recorder isnt recomended cause you do loose a noticable amount of quality.
