    AVI Header Corruption

    Hi,
I have some DVD that were sent to me. The DVD's are AVI files burned with pinnacle studio and are over 4GB each. *sigh*

When you play it in windows media player you can watch a couple minutes then you get:
File is not in the correct format: error(8004022F)

When I analyze them in gspot I get the error:
Corrupt AVI header /RIFF:AVI and then an offset and value are given.
Is this cause the file is over 2GB?

I have virtual dub and when I insert the disks it begins to try and fix the header. It ran for over an hour but I assume it is because the file was on a DVD and not on the drive where it could add the missing blocks, is that right?

I can't copy the file to my hard drive to try and fix it either. When I try to copy the file to my hard drive it errors out. I can't even copy it using a DVD burner. I don't have pinnacle studios to even see if it will play in there, so how can fix this?

Thanks so much from a desperate Jr Robotics coach

    1) Are these .AVIs of commercial movies? If so, discussion of anything to do with such activity is a violation of the rules of these forums (Rule #6, in particular).

    2) If not, what is your O/S?

Acutally no, I am a Jr Robotics Coach and the videos that were sent to me were from a state tournament in CO. I am trying to create a demo video for coachs around the world to use to show what being on a FLL team is all about. So don't worry I read the forum rules

We tried windows 98, 2k and XP...I have yet to get back to my desktop and try a linux distribution.

        "We tried windows 98"

They definitely won't work under Win98, because Win98's FAT32 storage system is limited to a maximum individual filesize of 4Gb.

"I have virtual dub and when I insert the disks it begins to try and fix the header. It ran for over an hour but I assume it is because the file was on a DVD and not on the drive where it could add the missing blocks, is that right?"

        That's a logical conclusion...

"I can't copy the file to my hard drive to try and fix it either. When I try to copy the file to my hard drive it errors out."

Please explain further. What is the SPECIFIC error message? Are you running out of hard drive space?

In 2k it does give me the error message that I don't have enough room on the disk, even though there is over 10 gigs free.

In XP it simply freezes and I have to end the task.

In 98..well you know that story.

You might try loading it into MPEGMediator, which incorporates "OpenDML .AVI" (allowing for .AVI filesizes greater than 2Gb), and then using MPEGMediator to cut it into smaller (Less than 2Gb each) pieces...

"even though there is over 10 gigs free."

Chances are the Windows Swap File is using most of what you think is "free space". You really should have a lot more free hard drive space available for working with videos of this size.

"Will converting the video effect the quality of the final video I produce?"

If you're referring to using MPEGMediator to cut it into pieces, there is NO conversion involved...

I found MPEG Mediator...when I try to open the avi files it says that there is no MPEG stream. What did I do wrong?

My deepest apologies - My head must have been elsewhere. MPEGMediator will NOT accept .AVIs for input...

Again, chances are your problem is due to insufficient hard drive space.

(If you can find an "Open DML .AVI" plugin for your system, it MAY be recognized by VirtualDub and/or VirtualDubMOD)
