you'll need ONE f the encoders i listed - they are all very similar in terms of quality & speed

take a look at avi2dvd - it is very userfriendly and easy to use

pretty much what you have asked for: converting avi to dvd/svcd/vcd

i'd convert to svcd though because upsampling from avi resolution to (higher) dvd resolution is stupid imho

convert from avi to svcd and then use dvdlab to author the svcd files to dvd

You can't generalize and say only make SVCD from his avi.
You have no idea the resolution, aspect, compression, or bitrate of the avi's. What if his avi's are DV captures?
I have some great avi's that make excellent full D1 dvd's. I also have some crap ones, than make excellent VCD's.
Either way, the encoding bitrate and aspect are based on the quality of the original, and I always author in DVDLab Pro.

i can exclude that we're dealing with selfmade dv avis, because someone familiar with this wouldnt ask the initial question

Heh, yes, we DO know the source of most of this stuff, and no, I never ask (although you're correct, some people do bait the noob's, just so they can puff up their ego's.)
For now, the OP get's the benefit of the doubt, although a Gspot screenshot (with the filename blanked out) would help us to help him a lot more.
