    Smooth playing DVD wanted!!

Hi this is my first post here....

My PC can't seem to play a DVD nice an smooth,

My friends PC is a PII 664 celeron. (Compaq) with 256MB sdram (PC100)

My PC (described below) has more RAM than his, the only diff. I can see is that his vid card is integrated, whereas mine isn't, he also uses a 80wire IDE cable I use 40. Would that matter?

Could someone tell me how I can get my DVD to play a movie, nicely?
    thks

    welcome to the forum

take into concideration that (in most cases) a pc is not just devoted to playing dvds. with all the background activity, hardware/sofware priorities, timings etc. all can contribute to messing up your smooth playback. even your dual-layer dvd can cause it with it's "layer breaks".
your hardware looks to be upto it.
try to have the "least" possible apps/tasks running, defrag your hdd prior to ripping & check your m/media & other hardware settings.

what prog are you using to view your dvd's ?

When U say 'ripping' do U mean copying (duh... how U spell the word 'n.e.w.b.i.e. .. loq)

I have Intervideo WinDVD4 I had tried the Cyberlink program, but had unistalled it, as it was playing the same as the WinDVD 4.

Actually, on my friends PC, I had put his HD into a PIII system and it gave me the same 'choppy results' as it did in his PII 633 Celeron, using the Cyberlink s/ware. When I uninstalled that program and installed the WinDVD4, it worked like a charm! I then put his HD back into his PII, with the same WinDVD s/ware, worked reall nice there too!

I wish my probs, would go away sooo easy!

      ths again

check, confirm & report the drives layout :
                prim. mast =
                prim. slave =
                2ndry mast =
                2ndry slave =

check the drives jumpers correctly set to their "master/slave" configurations.

Check your bios and see if you have video cache on or off, also check if you have 4x video support eabled. Also if you want to try here.

Ok.. after installing a new DVD player s/ware, I have rec'd a msg saying:

"Failed to create overlay surface on the Video card, you can:

                    1) Close all aplications and try again

                    2) Reduce the display resolution and/or Display frequency and try again

                    3) Reboot your Computer and try again.

Well, #1 didn't work.... #2 did when I dropped the resolution to 800X600 it ran a lot better. However, it did 'stop and go (realll quick) every minute or so, but it wasn't really consistant.

ANy further input? Perhap I should try another video card?...

                    thks

just to get to the solution a little faster - try it in 480 x 640, & if it's smoother - then it looks like vid card

well, the movie(s) I have tried more than the one. Play well in 800 x600 and 640 x 480, voice plays properly, (i,e they do not appear to be one of those old outta sync chinese kung fu movies.. lol) The movie still seems to hesitate evey 5 - 10 secs. it is a really slight hesitation.

ANy othe suggestions. Someone told me I should get another HD.

                        Thks 4 ya help.

Well, I am still having the same probs. I even tried an 80 wire ide cable. My DVD player is connected directly to the Main board. Here is a Summary of what Intervideo says about my config:
                          Perhaps something here might help.
Please note it plays ALMOST smooth, the audio seems to be okay! The prob I am having is a SLIGHT hesitation in the video every 5 to 10 secs.
