    Avi format

    Hello there,

I hope someone there can give me a hand.
I am having problems to get my Windows Media Player to play files with avi format. I cannot play some of the small videos I have. Eventhough some of them I was able to enjoy them previously. However, they won't display the images now. the sound is fine however the pictures wil not turn up.
I ahve even uninstall and installed back the windows media player. When I do right click on them-properties - tab- say thatunable to show preview since cannot find vids:div3 decompresser.

I am quite confused because I am still able to watch some other videos in avi format.

    Please help.

Sounds like you're missing a necessary codec(s) for the videos. Have you let WMP connect to the internet and download whatever codecs it says are needed?

You need to install the DivX v.3.11alpha codec...

Did you install the new Divx 5.0 codec? If you have, there has been some trouble with being able to play the old Divx 3.1 files. I thinks it's a bug they need to fix.

            Thanks guys for your responses.
However, how do I know which codec I have. And how can I install what I would need??
And what really puzzles me it that I was able to see some of the videos before and now I only can listen the sound.

Thank you again this site is wonderful!!

You can check which codecs are installed on your system by selecting 'control panel->multimedia->Devices->Video Compression Codecs', from there you can also remove codecs.
Donate your idle CPU time for something usefull.
