Need Help Editing Videos

I have the SONY DCR-DVD403 HANDYCAM camcorder. It's output is in the MPEG2 format. My goal is to add text to a movie. I do not want to convert the movie or video to MSWMM format or use Windows Movie Maker (been down that road, crashed and burned, not interested in going back again). Is there special software or hardware that I need to perform this task? I would prefer that the movie stay in MPEG2 format. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I like Ulead videostudio for adding effects. IMO easy to use and good results. You can d/l a trial version from the Ulead website.
