    Videos are washed out

    Howdy, all..

All the little videos (mpg's and avi's) are washed out (purplish, some yellow, bluish). It only happens on my XP at home. There is ONE avi that works....it is uncompressed. Other avi's are acting like the mpg's. It's only recently started.

I've downloaded the newest Windows media player (10) and reinstalled it. I've downloaded RealPlayer...both are doing this.

    Where do I start....thanks, mucho!

try these steps, playing your video between each step to see if it works:

    1. download & install the latest "alpha" version of "ffdshow"

    2. do you have your latest video card drivers? if not, download & install them

    3. do you have the latest version of "directx" (version 9.0c)? if not, download & install

      welcome to the forum

also, well worth checking if your vid-card's "app/setup-utility" hasn't been altered (colours, hue, brightness, contrast etc. (if you have it)).

any other ideas? I did all the things suggested. It didn't fix the problem. It's interesting that one avi file works....none of the others I've tried do, however...mpg or avi.

I'm running XP sp2...maybe I need to get an actual video card? I'm running on S3 ProSavage (VIA System KM266-8235).

          It didn't always do this.....hmmmm

you could try a "system restore" back to the time/date where it worked well
perhaps another program you installed altered/replaced your settings/drivers.

i was not aware that you were using an integrated video card. if you do not use your pc to play games, perhaps a cheap geforce or radeon card would be sufficient. the lower end ones cost around $60 Australian, or around $30 US

either way, you should notice a decent performance boost when running windows, as integrated video chips put aside a portion of system RAM for its own use...

Thanks again for the suggestions. A system restore would mean going back months and lots of changes since then. I think I'll try to get a video card.... I'm stumpted on this one.

(on-board vid card) - have you tried to delete/remove from "device manager" (& restarting for another detection) ?

I have also developed the EXACT SAME problem suddenly without knowing the cause.

I restored my computer back almost a month to before I installed Media Player 10 and the problem was corrected but I had also lost sound on quicktime but a reinstall of that fixed it. I first noticed it in Quicktime the crappy pictures washed out color negative pictures. Then after reading this checked Media Player AND Real Player and they too were doing exact same thing.

Also if you check the web there and many others with exact same problem. One fix for media player only that does seem to work is to disable overlay.

Now I too don't know the cause of this or the solution and aftyer reading about 100 posts the only thing I found was the media player work around. So its not hardware or other problems that are isolated only to you. It's something else that someone has screwed up.

Its probably or or more of the following:

                      Windows update
                      Media Player 10
                      MP4 codec
                      Newest Nvidia Video Driver

I am sure mine was doing it before the newest Nvidia driver was installed but still I am not installed it again yet.

Anyone have any more info on this???

                        I had the same problem
Just rollback your Nvidia Video Driver and that should fix it

I had the same problem with the Nvidia drivers, the 77.72. I rolled back and it was fine again.

There seems to be a problem with those drivers, not sure why but my MX 4000 card doesn't like them.

It's weird because it worked fine for a year or so. That's why I think maybe something (power surge ?) happened to the on-board chipset. I already had the original drivers installed then re-installed. Everything works fine now. I bought another board!
